What is this paper about
Porcelain veneers can be highly durable and tooth-preserving — but only when enamel is protected, bonding is controlled, and occlusal risk is managed. Abstract: To map and synthesize original research on porcelain veneers, with emphasis on clinical performance, tooth preservation, bonding substrate, preparation design, esthetic outcomes, periodontal response, digital workflows, and mechanical or optical factors that influence success. The review uses 179 references and builds its evidence map from 364 original studies with 1253309 total participants/sample observations (topic-deduplicated ΣN). The dominant signal across this scoping review is that porcelain veneers function as a conservative and durable esthetic modality when enamel is preserved, adhesion is controlled, and occlusal risk is managed, with cohorts reporting survival up to 97.4% at 10 years for lithium disilicate laminates and 98% at 7–14 years. Evidence consistently indicates that bonding to dentin rather than enamel is associated with substantially higher failure risk, reinforcing intraenamel preparation as the central clinical principle. Esthetic outcomes were associated with the combined influence of ceramic thickness, translucency, substrate shade, and cement selection rather than any single variable. Because most supporting evidence derives from heterogeneous case series and laboratory work, future randomized cohorts with standardized survival endpoints and enamel-mapping protocols are needed to confirm thresholds for predictable, minimally invasive veneer therapy.
